How to Reassess Your Piano Lessons
Like any complex skill, your approach the piano will evolve as you learn. Its a good idea to ask yourself some questions about where your piano lessons are going. For example:
- Do I like the same music as I used to? Am I interested in a different sort of music?
- Do I have the same motivation as I used to, or do I need to recommit myself do daily practice?
- Are there parts of my playing that I feel less confident about (for instance, understanding harmoniesor playing scales) and can my teacher help me with these?
- Do I still have some goal pieces in mind for down the road - some things to aim for?
Its not unusual for students and parents of students to reassess every now and then--and it can be very helpful! I have seen many people start to lag and then, when they recommit to setting goals and practice, have tremendous growth spurts.
If you feel like you are dragging a bit, just ask yourself where your motivation is coming from. The best motivation will come from your desire to learn and improve, and to enjoy music. So reassess where you want to be in a month, a year, or five years from now. Ask yourself what small pieces you would really enjoy -- or ask your teacher for some suggestions. Sometimes just a new piece can really move you forward. Also, make *sure* you are setting time aside every day for practice no matter what. Improvement is a great motivator, but you need to practice daily to see that happen.
Good luck with all your piano goals!
